DENT LAYOUT
Dent was the first completely new layout for the Buckley & District Model Railway Club after moving into the refurbished premises at Broughton.. The requirement was to model this area of the Settle and Carlisle Line as close to scale length as was feasible. This dictated N Gauge to keep the finished size to a reasonable length.
The front of the baseboards were built to a curve to improve the viewing of full length trains passing through the station. Later, it was decided to add a viaduct.
Arten Gill viaduct can be seen from Dent Station, but is a mile or so to the south. The main compromise on the layout is the elimination of this mile and a half so that the viaduct can be included in a reasonable length.
Construction is using 9mm ply for all structural items and foam over scrap materials for the large scenic areas. The colour pallette for the moors is suitably subdued and represents the area well.
As originally built, the tracked looped back under the edge of the scenery on the scenic boards. At exhibitions, this was found to give insufficient storage space to keep the layout busy without making & breaking trains.
It was decided to build a new fiddle yard the full length of the layout to store sufficient trains to maintain interest from the viewer without repeating. The construction of these boards is underway using plywood outer frames and foam board surfaces. These make for a very strong construction and very light weight..
